  1. A native of Blainville, France, Marcel Duchamp, along with Pablo Picasso, remains a major influence on modern art. Duchamp moved to Paris in 1904 and was influenced by C√©zanne, the Symbolists, Cubists, and Futurists. His painting, Nude Descending a  Staircase No. 2  (1912) created a sensation  when exhibited at the 1913 New York Armory Show. Moving to New York in 1915, Duchamp became the leader of the American Dada movement, exhibiting found objects to provoke the viewer.
